MTA is a great place to start your career in Motorsports. Read what some of our students have to say...

Justin Pownell - Kelly Bros RacingJustin Pownell

After being recommended to study at Wodonga TAFE, Justin Pownell moved all the way from Brisbane to obtain his Certificate III in Motorsports with MTA. He had previously worked in a car wrecking yard and his perception of the industry changed when he was no longer pulling objects apart but learning to put them back together.

‘This course opens up great opportunities’, says Justin. ‘Not only do you travel around the country and meet industry contacts, but you gain invaluable, hands-on experience.’

Obtaining an apprenticeship with Kelly Bros Racing as a result of his studies with Wodonga TAFE was a highlight for Justin. Since then, he has made friends across Australia. ‘The course attracts people from everywhere’, says Justin. ‘You always have people to catch up with no matter where you travel.’

With his ‘don’t hold back’ attitude, Justin encourages people who have a passion for motorsport to 'just do it!' ‘Take advantage of the opportunities that Wodonga TAFE can offer you’.

As well as undertaking his apprenticeship with Kelly Bros Racing, Justin has returned to Wodonga TAFE to complete his studies. ‘I chose to complete my study with MTA because of the supportive environment. Without this course, I would never have been given the opportunities which I have been given,’ he says.

Justin is very keen to finish his apprenticeship, and wants to move to America to work with NASCAR Racing.

Ethan Byrne - Ford Performance Racing, a V8 Supercar teamEthan Byrne - former MTA student

'I chose Wodonga TAFE because the facilities were really good and I heard it was the place to go and study motorsports. I have only ever seen Wodonga TAFE graduates at race meets so it seems like it's the most successful TAFE with the most graduates getting jobs after study.

I definitely have more knowledge and hands-on experience from doing the course.
I find that I have better business skills and a better understanding of the theory. We also learned a lot about occupational health and safety, and personal health and fitness as part of the Diploma, which has come in handy as well.'

Josh Peacock – Radical Australia

Josh Peacock - former MTA student'I am originally from Hobart, Tasmania and found out about MTA through a member of my car club. It really interested me as I had been building a clubman type car for a couple of years and it seemed a good way to learn some new skills. I checked it out on the net, applied, and got accepted to do the Certificate III of Motorsport in 2009. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I had ever made!

The course covered many different aspects of motorsport I was interested in and the skills I learnt became very useful even if just for my own projects.

I enjoyed the Certificate III course so much that I decided to continue with MTA in 2010 and do the Diploma of Motorsport. Over those two years I made many new friends who came from all parts of Australia as MTA was and still is, quite a renowned course. Part of the reason for this is that they have plenty of connections with motorsport teams and this allows you to take part in work placements at race meetings. I did various placements around the country and found myself drawn to sports car racing.

I am now employed by Radical Australia, the largest motorsport team in Australia and a well-known manufacturer around the world.

Thanks, MTA!'
